Nome, AK :: We were so thrilled to have the opportunity to work with this lovely couple in Nome, Alaska, but dang – was it ever cold there! We really thought we were prepared when we packed for the trip, and the forecast didn’t seem all that bad either… But I think, now matter what, we simply weren’t climatized for their kind of weather! Our teeth were chattering and my nose was running almost the entire time we were there, and I see the locals out walking around town in their shorts, drinking icy cans of coke! (What!?)
Nome is very much like a terraforming settlement on another planet. The town’s only real purpose is ‘work’ – at least while the weather allows – and hibernating the rest of the time! You don’t see people out trimming hedges or mowing lawns; and there’s no point in beautifying something that is either going to be covered in snow for 6 months, or mud for the other 6 months! …But it had an appeal to it and I really loved working in some of the shots we took around midnight (when the sun was setting – or rising – I’m not sure since it never got dark?!)
Gerald & Lori were great to work with and made our entire day really enjoyable. All their family and friends were such a warm and charming group as well, and really went out of their way to make us feel at home… well… with the exception of heat! (I think they really enjoyed watching us pretend we weren’t freezing!)
